Match Preview

Following the disappointing result against Ashby at The Paycare Stadium last Saturday, Darlaston tomorrow return to league action when they travel to League Champions Atherstone Town for their first home game since winning the league.

Atherstone are currently on an unbelievable run of 27 games unbeaten in the league. The Adders have lost just once in the 33 games they have played, way back on August Bank Holiday Saturday to now third-placed Stapenhill. Their impressive record this season is played 33 games, won 28 drawn 4 lost 1, scoring 87 goals, conceding a league low of 23 accruing a goal difference of plus 64.

In fact, this season in competitive football matches Atherstone have only been beaten three times in total. After a successful FA Vase Cup run the Adders lost to MFL Premier Division side Whitchurch Alport 3-1 after being 1-0 up at half time. In the Birmingham County FA Midweek Challenge Floodlit Cup, they lost for the first time since the 2016/17 season to Dean Gill’s Darlaston 1-0 a Liam Wilkinson first half strike secured Darlo’s semi-final berth.

Atherstone’s successful season has been driven by goals from Mitchell Piggon who leads the scoring chart with 18, closely followed by Brady Middleton on 17 with Alex Norton and Ryan Quinn also in double figures. The Adders will give nothing to Darlaston tomorrow as they will want to celebrate in style on the day when the fixture will be more than likely played in front of Atherstone’s largest crowd of the season because following the game the Midland Football League will present the League Winners Shield to the Atherstone squad.

Darlaston Town will tomorrow honour the League Champions before and after tomorrow’s but from the time the referee blows his whistle to start the game, all of the respect will disappear because Darlaston will be looking for the 3 points to continue their quest to hold onto second place in the league thus ensuring the first playoff game will be at the Paycare Stadium.

Darlaston last weekend suffered their first defeat in 15 games when they were beaten 1-0 by fifth-placed Ashby Ivanhoe at The Paycare Stadium. The squad has trained this week and played a friendly on Wednesday evening and should be in good form ready for the fixture tomorrow. At the time of writing the squad selected for the game is not available, and there may be late fitness tests for two players carrying injuries, it is hoped they will play.

Parking is expected to be at a premium because of the large, expected crowd. We hope to see as many Darlaston fans make the trip to support the club
