Once again, Darlaston Town will start to write a new chapter in their long history when they play their first ever game and another new division tomorrow at Trafford.
The clubs success post COVID has produced two promotions last season being our first ever season in the Northern Premier League playing in the Midlands Division. This summer the FA moved the club laterally into the West Division. Club historian Neil Chambers has confirmed the club has only ever played four teams in the West Division previously and one of them is tomorrow’s opponents, Trafford.
It promises to be a very exciting season ahead when we will meet and make plenty of new friends and acquaintances as well as visiting new grounds. Yes there is a lot more travelling involved than in previous seasons, but I hope on reflection when the season finishes we can all sit down and say it has been well worth it.
Tomorrow’s opponents Trafford have played in the Northern Premier League since winning the North West Counties Division One championship in 2008/09 and have played in this Division until now apart from two season’s when they were promoted into the Premier Division between 2013 to 2015 before suffering relegation back into the West Division
Trafford last season the club finished ninth 17 drawing 11 and losing 14 in their 42 game season. It would appear that they have retained the majority of last season squad but have lost Rio Clegg who with 20 goals last season he topped the West Division’s scoring table, Rio has joined National League side Radcliffe
Trafford‘s preseason like Darlaston’s has contained mixed results and the result of tomorrow’s game will not depend on how successful either Cubs pre-season campaign has been of their seven games they won three draw one and lost three beating their near neighbours. FC Manchester in must be a big local Derby.
The trip up the M6 tomorrow will be the first of many this season and the club have formed a new Travel Club managed by supporters Pete Davies, John Williams and Frank Twitchen assisted by Committee Member Lee Gil. Anyone interesting in joining the travel club or even travelling on tomorrow’s coach please contact Pete Davies on 07847 829921
