Darlaston town made their longest trip of the season to Grantham hoping to compete the double over their recent relegated opposition. Two first half goals ensured the long trip home was enjoyed by the players and travelling supporters.
The conditions were not conducive to good quality football from either side. The wind played havoc and a hard bouncy pitch did no favours to either side.
The visitors had the best of the first half. Kieran Cook playing a lone furrow up front keeping a young well organised Grantham defence on their toes. Despite their pressure a goal did not look likely and it was a touch of good fortune which led to the opening goal on 16 minutes. An inswinging corner on the right by Lewis Gill caused havoc in the Grantham goal line the ball going directly into goal with a helping hand from keeper Leverton.
The visitors doubled their lead on the stroke of half time Wolves loanee Hayden Carson scoring from 22 yards with a vicious strike giving Leverton no chance, the ball arrowed into his top left-hand corner.
The second half was a more evenly contested affair. Grantham gave everything they had in an effort to get back in the game. former Peterborough U21 striker Lewis Darlington posing a real threat, whilst the outstanding Ben Richards posed a threat at dead ball situations.
The home side got a foot hold back in the game on 63 minutes. Impressive youngster Kaden Scott scoring from 12 yards following a mistake at the heart of the Darlaston defence.
The conditions continued to affect the game, neither side enjoying a spell of pressure or possession, neither keeper called into action.
Despite being man handled, Darlaston substitute Leo Wood broke clear of his marker some 40 yards out and had a clear run on goal. Unfortunately, and typical of the day, the referee blew for a foul against the defender for a Darlaston free kick which came to nothing.
Neither side looked like scoring and the game wound down for a hard fought Darlaston win.
