Match Preview

Simon Cox27 Mar 2023 - 22:45

Darlaston tomorrow evening travel to league leaders Walsall Wood for yet another vital Midland Football League Premier Division clash. After suffering their first loss in fifteen league games on Saturday, Darlaston will look to re-group and will want to return to winning ways as soon as possible.

Walsall Wood's last six fixtures have produced three wins, two draws in the league and a loss to Atherstone Town in the League Cup, and their 10-plus point lead at the top of the table has eroded down to just four points with at least a game in hand over their nearest rivals, so a win tomorrow over Darlaston will help them tremendously in securing the League Title. Whereas Darlaston will want to win their game in hand over promotion rivals Lye Town to also open up a two-point gap over them and leapfrog over them into second place, coincidently Lye and Darlaston meet at the Paycare Stadium in the final week of the season.

Walsall Wood's last three league fixtures have seen the club beat Stone Old Alleynians 1-0 with a goal from Ryan Nesbitt played under lights at the Titan Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw at home against Highgate United who took the lead through Shea Palmer, Kevin Monteiro equalising just before half-time. Last Saturday Walsall Wood travelled to Isuzu FA Vase quarter-finalists Atherstone Town securing a good away point having gone behind very early on in the game to an Atherstone goal direct from a corner, Hayden Purves equalising although Walsall Wood suffered a blow as Carter Lycett was sent off after receiving a straight red card.

In a Walsall side stacked with talent, Jai Verma leads the scoring chart with eighteen goals, followed by mid-fielder Hayden Purves on seven along with Kayden May. Adam McGurk has scored six, with recent signing Joey Butlin from Chasetown scoring three since his arrival.

Darlaston meanwhile, after suffering very few injuries so far this season, now appear to have them stacking up, especially after Saturday’s game with forwards Kieron Miller and Jack Downing who both picked up ankle injuries on the poor surface at Stone on Saturday, so Manager Dean Gill could have a selection headache for tomorrow nights game, as the forecast suggests the Titan Stadium pitch could be heavy if tomorrows forecast is right.

The game promises much for the neutral with so much at stake for both clubs. Earlier in October Darlaston won at The Paycare Stadium 2-0 with two Dominic Dell goals, the first from the penalty spot, and Walsall Wood are sure to be looking to avenge that defeat which brought to an end their unbeaten start to the league season, whereas Darlaston will want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible given the tight situation at the top of the division with just five points separating the second to fifth place.

Tomorrow’s game will kick-off at 7.45 p.m. and is being played at:

The Titan Stadium
Lichfield Road
Walsall Wood
WS9 9NP

Admission prices: Adults £6.00, Concessions £5.00, Under 16’s £1.00 and must be accompanied by an adult and CASH ONLY on the gate.

We hope that many Darlaston fans will travel the short distance to tomorrow evenings game and look forward to seeing many regular supporters.
