Match Preview

Simon Cox26 Oct 2022 - 16:14

Tomorrow evening Darlaston welcome unbeaten league leaders Walsall Wood to The Paycare Stadium for a big local derby.

The fixture was previously due to be played the second week of September but was postponed following the Queen’s passing.

Under the guidance of Harry Harris and his assistant Steve Hinks, Walsall Wood have made an amazing start to the season and remain unbeaten in the league after their opening 14 games, leading the table by 10 points with a game in hand over second placed AFC Wulfrunians.

In Wood’s last six games, there have been four league fixtures followed by two cup games. Walsall Wood’s second game in October was against one of their rivals for promotion in many peoples minds Lichfield City. Wood travelled to their 3G pitch at the Trade Tyre Community Stadium. Harri’s team, secured a vital 2-1 win. Next up was a trip into Worcestershire to the most picturesque ground in the league Bewdley Town which resulted in a 3-0 win for the Wood. A return to their BBG Stadium to welcome newly promoted Studley from the Hellenic League saw produced another clean sheet allowing Walsall Wood to win comfortably 4-0. In their last league game before tomorrow evening, Wood travelled to bottom club Market Drayton where they secured a tight 1-0 win.

Walsall Wood’s last two games have been in the Staffordshire Senior Cup when in the first round they were knocked out losing 2-0 to Step 4 side Boldmere St. Michaels who were promoted last season after finishing Runners Up in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

Last Saturday, in the First Round proper of this seasons Isuzu FA Vase Walsall Wood travelled to Stapenhill, Darlaston's promotion rivals from last season, inflicting a 6-1 defeat on the Midland Football League Division One side.

Walsall’s in-form danger man is Jai Verma who has scored 11 goals in his 14 starts so far this season, five of those being scored in the last Six outings. Wood’s other main goal threats are Hayden Purves, Adam McGurk and Kayden May the trio so far have scored four goals each.

Darlaston meanwhile, buoyed with their 4-2 win over Lichfield City at The Paycare Stadium last Saturday cheered on by a ground of just below 200, are expecting a large crowd for tomorrow evenings fixture given the local interest and also being a visit from the League leaders.

Manager Dean Gill once again put his squad through their paces last night looking to prepare for Wednesdays fixture. There are no major injury concerns, although as per usual players are carrying knocks and strains giving the very busy recent playing schedule. It is hoped that last weeks signing Harry Higginson will be available for selection.

Gates open as usual at 6.00 p.m.
Kick-off 7.45 p.m.

Entrance - £6.00 Adults, £4.00 Concessions

A new programme will be on sale at £2.00 each and of course the bar will be selling its usual pre-match menu of hot and cold food and the bar will remain open throughout the game.

We look forward to seeing as many Darlaston, Walsall Wood and neutral supporters at The Paycare Stadium tomorrow evening for what promises to be a real good feast of football.
