Darlaston tomorrow complete their three history-making consecutive weekends, the lesser of the three achievements, but still should not be under-estimated. The club’s first home league game in their 148-year history above Step 6 or equivalent leagues in years gone by.
Following the unplanned and early exit of both Darlaston and Worcester City in the Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round, both clubs agreed to move the fixture that should have been played last Wednesday to tomorrow to ensure that neither club had a long break between fixtures. Tomorrow’s opponents are many people’s favorites for promotion this season, especially given their recruitment drive during the closed season.
Another club such as our own, steeped in history, particularly in the 70’s and 80’s with their FA Cup exploits knock out Football League Club’s most seasons along with playing in the upper echelons of Non-League football. After many years away from playing in the city of Worcester at such places as Kidderminster (3 years) and Bromsgrove (a season), last season saw City return back to playing within the town's boundaries at a ground all Darlaston fans know exceptionally well, Claines Lane, the former home of Worcester Raiders.
Claines Lane is now a fully refurbished facility the home of Worcestershire FA, and by all accounts is their “Jewel in the Crown” Last season Worcester finished in 4th place,in the Midland Football League Premier Division 9 points behind second place Boldmere St. Michaels having won 20 of their 36 games, drawing 5 and losing 11.
This season, Worcester has just played just two competitive games, unfortunately losing both. In the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, they travelled to near neighbours and Hellenic League Malvern Town, losing out 2-1. Last weekend the opening game of the league season brought Market Drayton Town to their Claines Lane home. Market Drayton had been relegated from Step 4 after a disastrous season and return home back to Shropshire with a 1-0 win, the winning goal scored from a set piece corner in the second half.
Irrespective of Worcester’s start to the season, tomorrow will be one of this season’s stiffest tests for Dean Gill’s squad given the pedigree of Worcester City’s squad and the drive of the club to succeed and return to the levels within the National League System that the club has historically played within.
Darlaston meanwhile, after their 4-0 win at Uttoxeter Town last Saturday with two goals from Keiran Miller in the first half and goals from Dominic Dell and Revel Mardenborough, along with a win against Stafford Town on Tuesday evening, will enter the fixture well prepared as always.
