Tomorrow Darlaston Town will travel to their first ever Midland Football League Premier Division game tomorrow when the team travel deep into Staffordshire to play Uttoxeter Town.
For the second week running Dean Gill’s squad will make cub history, Saturday will be the first time any team playing in the club's colours in its long 148 years history has played in a league at a higher level than Step 6 or equivalent levels and leagues that Darlaston teams have played in years gone by. It’s a huge achievement and should not be underestimated, especially given how many players and successful managers have represented Darlaston Town over the years.
After last week’s disappointment in the club’s first-ever venture into the FA Cup. The players and Management Team I am sure will be looking to “right the wrongs” of last weeks out of character performance when they found themselves 2-0 down after five minutes.
Saturday’s opponents Uttoxeter Town start the new season with a new manager at the helm. Local goalscoring legend James Curley was appointed in early June and has overseen the club's pre-season campaign retaining some players but also bringing in new faces to build his squad. The friendly games have seen mixed results, but they have played against lofty opposition in Leek town Newcastle Town and Mickleover Sports.
Uttoxeter were one of the orginal clubs that formed the Midland Football League since its inception at the beginning of the 2014/15 season when they werte placed into Division One finishing in 5th place in the first season. The following seasons produced mid-table finishes.
During the FA restructuring prior to the beginning of last season, Uttoxeter Town was one of three teams promoted out of Division One of the MFL into the Premier Division. Last season their first at step 5 saw the club finish 16th out of 19 teams. In playing a 36-game season they won 7, drew 9 but lost 20 games achieving a points total of 30 enough to keep their place in the Division for their second full season starting this Saturday and they will provide very stiff opposition for Dean Gill’s side.
Darlaston meanwhile this week after last Saturday's disappointing and “out of sorts” performance the management team has put the squad through two hard training sessions Following last Saturday's game I have not heard any reports of any new injuries or players being unavailable for any reason, therefore, Darlaston will travel with a fully available squad which is good news considering the importance of the fixture.
The club spoke to Dean this morning and he said "Last week's result confirmed why I don’t like losing, all managers out there will know the feeling.
We have had a great week reflecting and grafting and getting ready for this weekend’s game. The lads have been quiet and focused and I expect a much-improved performance tomorrow".
It is hoped that a large contingent of Darlaston supporters will make the trip into Staffordshire to support the club in such an important game in the club's history.
The fixture kicks off at 3 pm and is being played at Uttoxeter Town FC, Oldfield Sports Club, Springfield Road, Uttoxeter, ST14 7JX.
Entrance Adults £6, Concessions £4 under 16’s £1.
