Tomorrow evening Darlaston Town take a break from the pressure of Northern Premier League West Division fixtures and instead turn their focus to travelling to Enterprise National League side Tamworth for a Second Round Birmingham Senior Cup tie.
Tamworth are the current holders of the one of the worlds oldest cup competitions first played for in the 1875/76 season. Last season Tamworth beat EFL side Burton Albion 4-1 in the final to lift the trophy which is nearly 150 years old. The competition is Birmingham FA’s Premier Cup Competition that sees all clubs within their area including Premier and English Football League teams play alongside the best non-league sides in the Midlands.
Tamworth in recent years have been very successful under the management of the highly respected and highly rated Andy Peaks, both in the Emirates FA Cup, when last season they exited the competition in the third round at home against Premier Division side Tottenham Hotspur, after beating EFL league sides Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion. This after securing promotion back into the National League after being crowned Champions of the National League North.
Last season they secured a mid-table finish following promotion and this season they are currently 13th but have won just one of their last five league fixtures beating Boreham Wood 2-1 away from home. On the road they have lost games at Forest Green Rovers (4-2) Carlise (2-1) and last Saturday Scunthorpe (3-1), they lost their only home game to Rochdale 2-1. Therefore, like Darlaston Tamworth will welcome the break from league fixtures allowing them the possible the opportunity to play some fringe players. Darlaston will go into the fixture as massive underdogs.
