Darlaston tomorrow evening travel to the home of Emirates FA Cup Giant Killers Alvechurch, for a second round Birmingham Senior Cup fixture.
Tomorrow evening will be yet another first, in what is becoming a record-breaking season when Darlaston Town 1874 FC will play for the first time since reforming in The Birmingham Senior Cup, this after reaching the final of the Midweek Challenge Floodlit Cup last season.
Certainly, everyone in Midlands non-league football knows the recent exploits of Alvechurch who have risen from the bottom of The Midland Football League Premier Division to The Southern League Premier Central Division in a very short time under the stewardship of Chairman Richard Thorndike along with his fellow Directors and Committee Members. They have taken the club which was almost in financial ruin to being a successful business
Alvechurch are currently operating from two sites, their long time Lye Meadow home and a recently acquired site opposite the Blues Training Ground at Wast Hills now called The Hayes, where the majority of their youth and ladies teams train and play along with the clubs innovated Hybrid Programme.
It is well known that the clubs intends to sell their Lye Meadow home to developers which will then fund the next stage of development at the Hayes which includes a new stadium for the first team, at their new forever home.
Part of the success of the club must go down to the astute management team Ian Long, and his Assistant Richard Colwell along with their management team who despite a short break when Long took over at Stourbridge, have guided the club to success after success the latest being reaching the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.
This seasons form on paper does not look too good, there is a reason for that. Currently Alvechurch are in the bottom four in the league, but take into consideration that they are least four games behind most clubs within the Division due to their cup exploits, so far they have played in the league 11 games, winning 4, drawing 3 and losing 4 and in their last five games they have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 1 in the league. Add onto that the astonishing and outstanding Emirates FA Cup run, so when you look at that record, and take into consideration this is a new young squad guided by some experienced players, its not a bad start. Rest assured when the end of the season comes, they won’t be far away from the play offs.
Tomorrow is a special evening for both clubs.
Firstly, it is the homecoming of Alvechurch following Saturdays fantastic win against EFL Division One side Cheltenham Town and it is hoped there will be a large crowd to see the heroes of Saturdays fantastic win.
Secondly despite playing against Alvechurch many times over recent years this will be Darlaston’s first visit to Lye Meadow since reforming.
Games between the two clubs are always extremely close affairs, usually the odd goal decides the games despite Alvechurch’s Step 3 status. Both managers are really good friends and both squads will have players that have played for the other clubs within their squads for tomorrow night.
Everyone connected to Darlaston are looking forward to tomorrow nights fixture, an opportunity to put themselves against arguably one of the best sides within the Midlands area.
