Tomorrow evening, Darlaston’s first team return to The Paycare Stadium to face Midland League Premier Division side AFC Wulfrunians in the first round of this seasons J.W. Hunt Cup.
The cup, which has always been run in the Midlands for non-league clubs was named after Wolverhampton businessman and benefactor John William Hunt. The JW Hunt Cup as it’s known as today was first contested in 1926. Throughout the years the competition has raised over £360,000 for The Beacon Centre for The Blind.
In the competitions long history AFC. Wulfrunians have reached the final four times, losing on three occasions to Wednesfield, Bloxwich United and Black Country Rangers. Their victory was earned by beating Gornal Athletic 3-0 in the 2011/12 Final.
Darlaston meanwhile have reached the final on just one occasion in 2006/07, losing to Wyrley Rangers 3-0.
So far this season Darlaston are currently fourth in Division One whilst AFC. are in ninth place in the Premier Division having played the same number of games and they are just four points behind League leaders Lichfield City. Both teams have lost just two league games this season, whereas AFC have conceded 20 goals and scored 23. Darlaston have conceded 9 goals and scored 45 goals.
A.F.C. in their last four games have drawn away at Highgate United 1-1, the following mid-week drew 3-3 with Racing club Warwick and lost out in a close game in The Birmingham Senior Cup to Coventry City 2-1.
Last Saturday AFC. travelled to Romulus who are one place above them in the league and secured a 2-0 win. More than half of their goals have been scored by Aaron Bishop (7) and James Hill (6), who should not be a stranger to Darlaston supporters as Hill has played against them on several occasions when Darlaston were in Division One for Team Dudley.
Darlaston meanwhile in their last three fixtures drew 0-0 at Cradley Town, beat Dudley Sports 7-0 at the Paycare Stadium, and last Saturday beat Shawbury United 2-0 at their Ludlow home.
