Tomorrow sees four West Midlands (Regional) League Division One teams competing in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase sponsored by Buildbase.
Bromyard Town travel to Premier Division Cradley Town, whilst St Martins, Tipton Town and Gornal Athletic all face away trips to opposition from other leagues. Tipton and Gornal face Midland Football League Coventry United and Uttoxeter Town respectively, St Martins travel to Leicestershire where they meet Ashby Ivanhoe of the East Midlands Counties League.
Winners in this round are guaranteed £550 whilst losers will receive £175. Winners of the overall competition receive £30,000. The competition is open Nationally to clubs at Step 5 (Midland Football League Premier Division) and below but clubs must have floodlights hence we are not eligible to enter.
Our last foray in the FA Vase was in 2009/10 as a Premier Division Club when we were beaten 5-0 by fellow West Midlands League side Bustleholme FC.
Our best run in the competition came in 1995/96 when we reached the Second-Round proper before losing at Manchester based Trafford FC. Our first qualifying round tie against Central Midlands League Gedling Town made national headlines. We won the game at The City Ground 4-2 with a hat trick from Neil Walters and a Den McGregor strike seemingly assuring us progress. However, the Gedling Chairman complained and made a formal complaint to the FA that one of the goals was too low.
An FA representative duly visited the ground that week and on a set of step ladders measured both goals, coming to the conclusion that one of the goals was an inch out. The FA ordered a replay which we duly won 3-2. Club stalwarts Neil Chambers, Gil Preece and Dave Steventon were at both games and needless to say the Gedling Chairman was the subject of some "light hearted" abuse on the day of the replay. Of course, the charming trio, still involved with the club today, were as quiet as church mice !!!!!!!!
The club wishes all West Midland (Regional) League Premier Division clubs the best of luck but we send our very best wishes to Tipton Town, Gornal Athletic, Bromyard Town and St Martins and hope they fly the flag for our Division and come back from their travels with fine wins against higher League opposition.
