This charity is extremely important to us all at Darlaston, given the immensely sad loss of someone so close to everyone at the club to asthma. This week I asked Nicola Waite retired committee member and volunteer at the club to write a piece about the reasons why, this is what was received
“The reason we have chosen asthma UK is because of my sister “Lauren Wilkinson” Aka Lolly whom the stand at The Paycare Ground was named after because during Jan 16th 2017 Lolly passed away from an asthma attack which led to a cardiac arrest. She was 17. Lolly was a regular volunteer at the Pavilion and had a naturally friendly character...dubbing the chairman “Chambo” and getting away with it! She loved helping out glass collecting at club nights and events and was and will always be part of the reason why I got involved in the club in the first place and that’s so young people in the area had a place to go, play football and hopefully one day play and represent the club where they come from.
Lolly always had an amazing outlook on life, bringing people together and celebrating different cultures, literature and hobbies. She was a determined young lady who had her whole life ahead of her.
Everyone at the club was hit massively by her passing and it was a real testament to her position in the club that the first stand was named in her honour.
Lolly was a student in sixth form at local Grace Academy and was studying to go to University where she wanted to become a Physiotherapist to give back to the profession that had so often helped her back to health with her dodgy lungs.
We originally held a campaign called “Hugs for Lolly” and raised in excess of £7,000 for Walsall Manor Hospital to improve the service for young people effected by asthma in the borough. The money raised has seen an app being developed and the remaining balance is being finalised to improve the adolescent room ensuring the best home from home while in hospital.
This time around we want to donate the money to asthma UK who fund research to develop new treatments, provide information and advice to families and sufferers and hopefully one day find a cure to asthma.
£10 can connect people with asthma nurses on the asthma helpline ...the UK’s only specialist helpline, £25 can put asthma issues on the agenda and help to change policies to improve lives and £50 could help research new tests and identify better treatments for people with asthma so it really can make a huge difference to the lives of people who suffered like Lolly".
Entrance to the game is Adults £5, over 12’s and concessions £3, under 12’s free.
All money raised from the charity game on Sunday will be going to the charity in Lolly’s honour”.
Why not come and spend Sunday afternoon with the family in the sun, in a great friendly environment with a fully stocked and open bar and donate money to an outstanding cause.
