The search is on for rare Darlaston Programme

Davide Piras12 Apr 2014 - 13:36

" Recent publicity about the re-emergence of Darlaston Town has reached as far as Liverpool. We were contacted this week by 65 year old Phil McCrudden of Liverpool.

Phil is a massive Wolves fan and an avid collector of all things relating to the late great Derek Dougan.

Phil says " I first became a fan of the late Derek Dougan as a 12 year old after seeing him make his Football League debut for Aston Villa in the opening fixture of the 1961/62 season at Goodison Park against Everton. I just fell in love with the man and his style of centre-forward play. This was the game when I first noticed his Yul Brynner hair cut and I remember him ambleing on to the pitch like something out of a Hollywood B movie rather than a football game, something that was unheard of in the day although very popular with the players of today.

I started collecting memorabilia of The Doog starting with match day programmes from games he appeared in. It became my main interest and I set out with the intention of obtaining one from every game he played in. I became a big fan of Wolves in the mid 1960s and was overjoyed when Doog joined them in 1967. I attended most of his games while he was at Molineux and have some great memories of this era especially his home debut for Wolves when he scored a hat-trick v Hull City.

I have most progammes from his time with his six Football League Clubs, Portsmouth, Blackburn , Aston Villa, Peterborough, Leicester and Wolves as well as Non-League Kettering Town . I also have programmes from 40 of his 43 appearances for Northern Ireland many from his his 73 games for Belfast Distillery.

One of the programmes missing in my collection is from the Darlaston v Kettering game in the 1976/77 FA Cup. The game will be remembered because former Wolves player Terry Wharton was player manager for Darlaston whilst The Doog was player manager at Kettering. The game was drawn 1-1 with Kettering winning the replay in controversial circumstances.

I am desperate to add this programme to my collection and would be delighted if any Bugle reader would sell me their copy".

Current committee member Craig Davies recalls the game as he was also on the committee at the time " I was in possession of approx 200 programmes selling them to the line of people stretching from the Slater Street turnstile round to the Post Office in Victoria Road. I sold the lot in about 15 minutes. There were more than 1500 in the City Ground , Benji Blower scored a header to equalise in a 1-1 draw. They were great days and hopefully will be repeated."

Anyone with a copy of this rare programme should contact current Darlaston Town (1874) FC or The Chairman Neil Chambers on 07976 752698 - email chambers568@btinternet.com.
