After a torrid and difficult few weeks Darlaston Town returned to The Paycare Stadium for the first time since 31 January when they beat, then League leaders Lower Breck 1-0.
With the entire management team and first team squad leaving the club over the last three weeks, new manager Exodus Geohaghon started the day with 13 debutants and 3 returnees in his squad, Cameron Hall, Jordon Spragg and Justice Campbell returning to the club after absences from the club in recent times.
In front of a crowd of 224 Darlaston held their own against local rivals Chasetown who moved into 8th spot following a late Luke Yates winner.
Chasetown had the edge in first half possession without unduly troubling debutant keeper James Carr. For the visitors, the lively front line of Joey Butlin, Luke Yates and Tyrell Skeet- Hamilton prompted and probed but the Darlaston, new look back four who had never played together before stood firm and dealt calmly with pretty much everything Chasetown threw at them. Former Fleetwood Town and Motherwell defender Victor Nirennold and Spragg were superb ta the heart of the home defence whilst another debutant Kye Wade and Justice Campbell impressed in midfield.
Neither side created a first half chance of note, both keepers virtual spectators. However it was Darlaston that went into the half time break the happier their completely new look team, well organised, defensively strong with several snippets of excellent play.
The second half was similar to the first half, neither side imposing themselves, Darlaston gaining in confidence as the half went on, and the players getting to know each other better and understand each others roles and qualities.
It was Darlaston who created the best two chances of the game within a couple of minutes of each other. Chasetown keeper Curtis Pond making two quite magnificent saves to deny Hall from close range, with smothering saves.
It was indicative of Darlaston's luck over the last several weeks that the only goal of the game came on 82 minutes in fortuitous circumstances for the visitors. Home keeper Carr receiving a back pass, his attempted clearance from 6 yards, charged down by the hard working Luke Yates, the ball gong into the net, to break the hearts of the Darlaston faithful.
