There has been a lot of discussion following yesterday’s game, and while opinions will always differ, I want to take the opportunity to reflect calmly and respectfully on the performance and the facts.
First and foremost, yesterday was not treated as a “big day out” for us. We prepared for Bury in exactly the same way we prepare for every opponent in this league, with respect and focus. Our preparation reflected the realities of our week: having played and beaten Avro only days earlier, with players working full-time jobs alongside their football, recovery and player welfare had to come first.
Our players gave absolutely everything they had to get a result. We worked hard, we competed, and we made it difficult for a very strong and well-resourced side. That was by design. Limiting an opponent’s strengths, staying organised, and competing for every yard is part of football, and my players executed that game plan with real discipline and commitment.
From a personal perspective, I want to be clear that any interaction with supporters during the game was never intended to cause offence or disrespect. If my actions were perceived that way by anyone, I sincerely apologise. That was never my intention. The focus should always remain on the football and the efforts of the players on the pitch.
I would also like to acknowledge the match officials, who had a difficult afternoon in challenging circumstances and handled it professionally.
Now to what really matters - the performance of our team. Given the physical demands of the week, we knew energy levels would be tested, but the lads showed tremendous resilience. In fact, I felt we grew into the game and, considering the circumstances, can feel proud of how well we matched our opponents. On another day, with a bit more freshness, we might even have taken all three points.
I’m particularly pleased for Leo, who continues to play a vital role for this club, but credit goes to every player and member of staff for their contribution to a very positive end to a demanding week.
Thank you to our supporters, who once again represented the club with pride.
We now turn our attention to Saturday’s home game against Congleton and look forward to the next challenge.
