Darlaston Town made the long trip to Ashton Under Lyne, Oldham, knowing that nothing other than a win would extend their season and give them any hope of avoiding relegation.
Unfortunately for them they suffered their 14th defeat by a single goal this season. In only their 2nd season at Step 4 the lateral move to the West Division proved to be a step too far. A much stronger division than the Midland Division, Darlaston struggled most of the season against much bigger well supported clubs.
At the picturesque Seel Park, Darlaston made the better start, early chances falling to Sutherland and Geoghagon, opportunities they were to rue later in the game. Early injuries to Dawkins and the influential Koby Arthur resulted in substitutions which upset their rhythm resulting in the home side starting to see more of the ball creating chances of their own.
Late in the half Sutherland thought he had given Darlaston the lead, only to be denied by a close offside decision.
The game was won in the opening minute of the second half. Substitute Callum Stringer making an immediate impression setting up Oumar Camara to net the only goal of the game.
Both sides created chances, Mossley denied by the post , some good goalkeeping by both keepers, and some excellent defending by both defences, kept the scoreline down.
At the moment Darlaston simply cannot buy a goal, and despite an improved performance they paid a heavy price for their early misses.
A word of praise for everyone at Mossley AFC. game played in good spirit, officials, supporters and players top notch at the most picturesque ground in the Division.
