Darlaston edged out under the lights

Darlaston edged out under the lights

Neil Chambers

Improved performance again, but still no points.

With the imminent appointment of the new manager. Interim boss Mark Swann took charge for the final time. Swanny will now return to his committee and matchday secretary duties.

Swanny can be pleased that in his three league games in charge he has steadied the ship with improved performances, increased workrate and has been unlucky not to pick up more points.

Under the lights against local rivals Lye Town Darlaston fell to a single goal defeat in a 5 goal thriller.

For the first time in more than 500 minutes of football Darlaston took the lead, 5 minutes into the game. Tyrike Richards - Burke pace took him past his defender on the right flank his low cross turned home by Ben Lund with an exquisite finish for his first goal since re-joining the club.

The equaliser came on 15 minutes, Alfie Didlock with an excellent finish.

The game was evenly poised, Lye centre half Charlie Hewitt was superb at the heart of the defence. Skipper Martin Slevin was outstanding winning most of his challenges, covering every blad of grass and playing the simple game that football is, with some superb passes, short and long.

For the home side skipper Jordan Spragg was again the stand out player, but the performances of Richards-Burke and Ollie Jeeves did not go unnoticed.

Four minutes before the interval, the visitors took the lead, Luke Sidaway rising unopposed at a corner to firmly plant his header beyond keeper Spencer Tootell.

Darlaston responded on 57 minutes. With a high press on a Lye defender, Ben McSkeane nicked the ball off him to set up Ollie Jeeves to score his first goal for the club, with a low hard drive into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

The game remained tight and evenly balanced, the work rate and quality of both teams belying their league positions.

Unfortunately for Darlaston it was the visitors who grabbed the winner on 71 minutes. Substitute Jack Till crossing from the left, headed back into the path of Didlock for his second goal of the game, his deflected drive from 12 yards beating keeper Tootell.

Both sides had half chances without looking like scoring as the visitors took the spoils.

Darlaston played out the final 10 minutes with ten men after skipper Spragg was sent off for two yellow cards.
