Back to Back Vase Winners Reunion is a Resounding Success

Saturday saw players & management of the consecutive winners of B'ham County FA Vase meet up for the first time in 20 years

Former players and management from the classes of 1990/91 and 19991/92 were at The Paycare Ground on Saturday to see the current team beat AEI Rugby in the 1st Round of the Birmingham County FA Vase.

Darlaston are the only team ever to have won the competition in consecutive years and to acknowledge the achievement former players and management were invited to the game on Saturday as VIP guests of the club. They enjoyed free entry , a complimentary programme which featured the achievements of the 1990/91 and 1991/92 teams as well as pre match, half time and post match hospitality. They met up with long serving Darlaston stalwart Gil Preece who was part of the back room set up for both victories.

Amongst those who attended were former Aston Villa, Swansea and Walsall winger Jimmy McMorran who had 3 spells as manager of the club and was was manager of the 1991/92 Vase winning team. Also present on Saturday were Mark Bates a former Walsall, Shrewsbury and Darlaston midfielder, skipper Mick Rawlins. Ian Hughes, "Iggy" Patel, NeiI Jones, Simon Turpin, Peter Stone and former player / manager Colin Johnson.

Bates said " We had a fantastic day. It has been 20 years since we last got together and within minutes of meeting up the banter started and it was as if we played together last week. The club treated us superbly and the set up is brilliant. Jimmy (McMorran) said to me "Batesy can you imagine what we could have achieved with a set up like this".

Former player/manager Colin "Johnno" Johnson said " What a great turn out from former players and management today. Everyone enjoyed it and we would love to meet up again at another game. You've got a good team and they played some good stuff today"
