Three goal in the opening 15 minutes gave Darlaston a dream start at AFC yesterday

Just 48 hours after their emphatic 4-0 home win against Stourport Swifts, Darlaston travelled to the plush surroundings at the Prestige Midlands Arena, returning home with all three points after an excellent team performance, capped off by a Kieran Cook hat trick. A crowd of 203 bolstered by a strong travelling contingent were treated to a superb game of football and four goals that would have graced any standard of football.

Manager Dean Gill kept faith with the side that beat Stourport, his faith rewarded with another excellent team performance, where every player, was 8 out of 10 or better.

The visitors made a positive start and were energetic and competitive from minute one. Both Aaron Bishop and James Rowland had good chances to open the scoring in the opening five minutes. Bishop shooting across the face of goal and Rowland was denied with his close range effort, his shot being blocked on the goal line.

Home keeper Joe Williams was called into action palming a Rowland free kick over the bar on 9 minutes. Darlaston took the lead from the resulting corner, Cook eluded his marker, leaping high to meet Chesterton's right wing corner with a superbly timed header giving Williams no chance in the home goal.

The goal gave the visitors confidence and within 6 minutes they had tripled their advantage with two more high quality goals. Firstly on 12 minutes, a free kick taken by keeper Tom Allsopp deep in his own half was flicked on by Bishop, Cook again on hand to drive home low to Williams's left from15 yards. Within three minutes it was 3-0 to the visitors. A Jack Downing throw in causing havoc on the Wulfs defence, who failed to clear properly, Jake Pearson laid the ball off to Mardenborough on the edge of the penalty area, the striker turning and shooting in one movement from 18 yards to beat Williams at his right hand post.

Darlaston were now in the ascendancy and could have added to their goal tally, Bishop Mardenborough and Cook all failing to find the target with efforts, blocked, saved or going wide.

Downing and Chesterton made forward runs, whilst Ben Podmore and Alex Foreshaw were solid at the back and a handful up front as the visitors had numerous chances from corners and free kicks.

Despite Darlaston's dominance for the first half hour, Wulfs started to see more of the ball and have more possession, playing some excellent football as they sought to get some sort of foothold back in the game. Kai Adams was prominent and former Tividale midfielder Curtis Cocking and former Halesowen striker Lee Chilton seeing more of the ball, but with Pearson and Ryan Winwood holding strong in midfield, the home side found it difficult to break down a strong Darlaston defence.

Both sides were guilty of conceding free kicks at or around the edge of their respective penalty areas, but nothing came from any of them. Wulfs only real chance of the half came on 35 minutes, a right wing corner causing difficulties in the Darlaston goal area, Pearson's clearance in turn creating difficulties in the home defence, with defender Tom Poole fortunate not to see red as he hauled back Cook five yards into the half with Cook clear on goal. It was only the distance to goal that saved the defender, the referee producing a yellow card.

Cook's hat trick and the best goal of the game came three minutes into the second half. Cook raced fully fifty yards outpacing two defenders before powering into the area lifting the ball over advancing keeper Williams with a sublime chip from 10 yards.

Although Darlaston remained in the ascendancy, Wulfs continued to play with great spirit, the second half possession statistics pretty much even although most of the pressure was on the Wulfs defence.

Mardenborough and substitute Josh Jones (twice) shot high over the bar, whilst Williams made an excellent one handed save palming away a Ben Podmore header.

Wulfs skipper Brad Maslem Jones was pushed further forward to add height and power to the Wulfs attack, but Podmore and Foreshaw were majestic at the heart of the defence, keeper Allsopp rarely called into action.

Following the game, Manager Dean Gill reflected " Just three months ago, Wulfs comprehensively beat us at home to inflict our only home league defeat of the season. I was delighted to avenge that defeat which followed up on Saturday’s excellent win against Stourport. Once again, I was delighted with every single player today. Cookie (Kieran Cook) is an excellent signing for us, and his class and quality showed in droves today. We play our third game in 5 days at Stourport tomorrow (Wednesday) and so I am delighted we haven't picked up any injuries. Whilst the level of performance in our last two games has been excellent. It will be hard to maintain those levels, but rest assured we will continue to look for performances like that in our remaining five league games."
