An Influential defender is returning to the club

Darlaston Town are delighted to announce the return of Liam Smith from Midland Football League Division One side OJM Black Country.

Liam joined Darlaston initially at the beginning of the 2019/20 following the club’s promotion into the West Midlands Premier Division. His first two seasons at the club were heavily disrupted by COVID, restricting him to just 45 appearances before leaving in October last year to sign for OJM Black Country.

As many of you will remember we played OJM Black Country twice after Christmas. The first an exciting 4-4 draw at Lye Town’s Stourbridge Road ground, and a 4-2 Birmingham FA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup Semi-Final in early March at the Paycare Stadium, in which Liam scored for OJM with a far post looping header to level the scores just before half time.

Manager Dean Gill said on the return of Liam Smith “Liam is a great example of doing things properly, he was with us last season early on but felt he wanted to move on. We played against Liam who moved to OJM Black Country several times and he was their standout player for me. So as soon as the season was over, I asked him if he’d come back to Darlaston for the coming season. We had a good honest chat, and he will add great leadership and quality to us”.

I caught up with Liam last night and he said “I am delighted to be returning to Darlaston, as I have always had a great connection with the club, committee and fans, so after meeting with Dean and hearing his plans for this coming season it was an easy decision to make to return to the club and I am really looking forward to the season ahead”
