Darlaston travel to the River Severn at Stourport tomorrow to take on Droitwich Spa

Tomorrow sees Darlaston Town (1874) travel to Stourport-on-Severn to play one of the biggest games of the Season against Droitwich Spa who currently sit at the top of The West Midlands League Division One with a two-point lead over Worcester Raiders.

Back on August Bank Holiday Saturday earlier this season, both teams met for the first time putting their 100% records on the line. Fortunately, Manager Parkes and his team beat Droitwich 3-1 ending their record. Since that game some may argue that the form of both sides has gone in two different directions. The game was personally so far, the pinnacle of Darlaston’s season certainly from a performance perspective. It was a fantastic game to watch, played in totally the right spirit. Droitwich took the lead from the penalty spot after Liam Whittaker had tripped a Droitwich player. Leon Taylor levelled the score ten minutes afterwards and in the second half a defensive error gifted Darlaston and Leon a second and then Noah Diallo curled in a third.

Since the game at the end of August, Droitwich’s good form has continued beating Old Wulfrunians on August Bank Holiday Monday 2-0 at home to get back to winning ways in the league. Unfortunately, Spa lost in the F.A. Vase a week later to Coventry United 4-2.

Back to League action on 8th September when Droitwich travelled to Newport Town beating them 2-1 with the assistance of a Newport own-goal late in the game. 15th September saw Sikh Hunters travel to Stourport to play by the river and returned home empty handed on the end of 4-0 Droitwich win.

The score-line was repeated once again a week later against bottom club Willenhall Town. The following Saturday it was the opposite, Team Dudley travelled to Walshes Meadow for a top of the table clash. A very cagey first half saw the scores level at half time. Droitwich took the lead with a Haydn Morris goal, equalised by James Fletcher from Team Dudley later in the game.

Droitwich had a week off from League football when they played Hanley Swan in the Worcester Saturday Junior Cup, beating their opponents quite comfortably 4-0.

As they returned to League action at the beginning of October, a short trip to Bromyard Town resulting in a 6-0 win, goals from Cottrill, two from Hunt and a hat-trick from top scorer James Lemon. Again, Droitwich Town were on their travels mid-week into Shropshire to Wellington, much closer game this time resulting in a 4-3 Spa win, two from Lemon and a goal each from Morris and Crowther secured the points.

The following Saturday saw an end to a goal fest week with a 4-1 away win at Gornal Athletic with James Lemon once again on the score-sheet. The score line flattered Droitwich Spa somewhat as two goals came in the last few minutes of the game.

Yet another successive away trip to Allscott resulted in another convincing 3-0 win, Tillbury scoring twice and Lemon a single goal.

Droitwichs’ last League game was on 27th October, three weeks ago tomorrow. Yet another top of a table clash against Worcester Raiders. Raiders opened the scoring within the first two minutes of the game and the visitors then doubled their lead in the 25th minute. Droitwich scored two late goals at the end of the first half to enter the half-time break with the score-line at 2-2.

There were no further goals in the second half except in the 90th minute the Referee awarded Worcester a hotly disputed penalty by the home team and crowd. Worcester dispatched the penalty to win the game 3-2 and to close the gap on the divisional leaders.

Droitwich have not had a total break for the last three weeks as they played Bromyard in a League Cup fixture on Wednesday evening, which resulted in a 6-0 Spa win.

Droitwich are new to The West Midlands League having been moved parallel in the football pyramid by The F.A. after a successful few years in The Total Motion West Midlands League Division Two where they had not finished outside of the top three for the past three Seasons.

Having moved away from their King George playing fields at Droitwich to re-locate to Stourport Swifts in order ensure that if in the event of them being in a position to be promoted, the ground will fulfil the requirements to be promoted to Step 6.

Droitwich have several danger men, but the main goal threat is the top-scorer for the last three seasons James Lemon who so far has scored on 13 occasions in the League so far this Season, Haydn Morris with 5 goals, Benjamin Tilbury with 4 goals followed by Curtis Townly and Jack Davis.

Kick-off for the game is 3 o’clock. The ground is located on the far side of the river and the full address is Stourport Swifts F.C. Walsh’s Meadow, Harold Davis Drive, Stourport-on-Severn, DY13 0AA

If you follow the one-way system through Stourport Town Centre and follow the sign posts for the Sports Centre, after you have gone over the river via the bridge, turn 1st left into Harold Davis Drive and the ground is behind the Sports Centre.

Entrance is £3.00 for adults – Concessions £2.00 and Under 14’s free.
